Reading the Bible
On Sunday 1st June our message subject was "The Church Jesus builds loves the Bible." We acknowledged most people feel like failures when it comes to reading the Bible and rather than trying to make us all feel bad enough so that we pull up our socks, I want us to actually think about how we might get more out of our experience with the Bible.
Forgetting the myth that every 'proper' Christian has an hour quiet time every morning, these were my tips for getting more out of the Bible when we read it:
Forgetting the myth that every 'proper' Christian has an hour quiet time every morning, these were my tips for getting more out of the Bible when we read it:
- Read regularly - at least once a week
- Read deliberately - chose a book and work through it
- Read small chunks - quality not quantity and depth not length
- Read out loud - it slows you down and makes you think about what you're reading
- Put it into your own words - think about how you would explain it to someone else
- Stop reading when you have a question about the text - think and pray about it and try to understand what's going on
- Make notes - it helps you remember what you've learnt and marks where you've got up to
What about you? What have you found helpful or effective when reading the Bible? Do you use a scheme or a website or a book? What habits have you got into? What time of day do you do it and how do you make time?

I have found this website useful:
http://www.biblestudyplanet.com/
It's accessible wherever an internet coection is and you don't need a Bible, stud or any other kind!
Apparently it caters for all ages but I've not looked at the Kids stuff!
Being a nerdy geeky boy I have found carrying my bible on my PDA / mobile phone quite literally a God send...
Not only does it come with a host of references, dictionaries and commentaries but it also has two daily reading options, the classic bible in a year one but also (& the one I'm doing) Everyday with Jesus series.
The best thing about having it on my PDA / Mobile phone is that I always have it on me where ever I am and being electronic it means if I miss a few days rather than beat myself up over it (which I used to and found that in itself made me less inclined to read my bible)I can push a couple of buttons and my reading plan is automatically updated so I'm never behind - which in turn makes me far more keen to persevere..
The reading plan comes with a passage and accompanying 'thought for the day'.
Not that I'm plugging any particular brand but this is the one I use (bought it via Wesley Owen online)

The website I can recommend is www.studylight.org
It has loads of resources. The ones I seem to end up using the most are the Holman Bible Dictionary (under the section "Study Resources>Dictionaries") and the commentary by David Guzik (this is found when you look up a verse and click on the "Commentary on ____" that is next to GUZ or in the "Commentaries" section)
